Are you looking at writing your first book? Whether it be for poetry, fun, a novel or a biography, you have to start somewhere.
Where will you start?
While I recently finished my book of Poetry that was definitely not the first book I began.
How did I get started?
To be honest writing to me is like a fever dream it’s a thing I must do to get the ink out of me and onto the page. One day I sat at my computer and the anxiety and warmth filled my chest and my mind was spinning out of control sweat beading at the base of my neck and I gingerly opened up my Word app and knew that I had to get this story, this dream, out of my imagination and into the world we live in.
I wrote feverishly until my hands ached and the computer was begging me to let it rest but day after day I came to the keyboard and wrote.
Finally the story became a rough draft on my screen instead of a movie playing over and over in my mind.
It has been molded and shaped to fill in the gaps so that I could create a story that not only I could see, proof read by strong readers who helped create something I couldn’t fathom would ever see the light of day.
I have breathed life and tears into the pages that now sit before me with red ink and circles additional pages hoping to be edited and revised soon.
Taking my time to create a piece of me that anyone who dares to read it can appreciate, whether they love or hate the story doesn’t really matter so much as whether it touched their soul in one way or another.
If you are thinking of writing you don’t have to do what I did and allow it to consume you and spit you out. Take your time. Breathe, eat, sleep. The story doesn’t become real until you create it.
So dear reader let’s start there.
Who are you writing about? Outline your characters, describe their features, make them real as if I could reach out and touch them.
Where are they? In a malt shop, a school, a garden, or the sea? Describe their surroundings, can they smell the sweet fruit hanging from trees or taste the salt of the oceans on their lips?
What is their purpose? What is their story? Individually and together how do they align with each other? What are they trying to teach us?
Are there twists? Turns? Is there a protagonist or just an antagonist?
Do we love them or hate them or do we fall for them and lose them? Do we despise you as an author because you built our hopes up and then dashed our dreams only to create something even better than what we had foreseen?
Building this world should be fun and fulfilling, sometimes frustrating and disappointing especially when the words don’t match what you want others to feel.
Share your thoughts and ideas or share your story with us we’d love to read it and give tips or ideas where and when we can.
And just maybe you’ll get to see our story unfold.
With Love,
Gv Rioz
