Protesting

I like many of you have been witnessing what is happening in our world today. While many days it is difficult to even process what we are seeing online I saw a very smart man say “We are fighting a war against the screen.”

He’s right we are fighting for Americans; Americans without papers, and Americans with. Our rights are being stripped from us, our democracy too. We are not an Oligarchy and never have been. America, has no KING.

To explain the way I’ve been feeling I wrote this. Maybe it will resonate with you the way it did with me.

It’s been hard to put into words what I want to say

So instead I channel my art to find my way

I draw these lines that bring me back to my roots

Moments in time that remind me that we are living proof.

Proof that protests can help make change

That women and men are more than just a slur name

That these people, our people, do not fight in vain

I have roots that are buried deep beneath the American soil

Being Native and Latin means that these roots grew from the blood and tears of our people

Mixing in with every field that is toiled.

I protest silently in every way that I can

Learning, Drawing, Writing, Working, creating magic with my hands.

And as I have said again and again

these people are not one thing, one verb, one slur you can use to define.

We are all apart of this revolution, it is yours and it is mine.

But mostly I’d like to make you digest

That America is built on the foundation of immigrants

People who fought to be free,

free from tyranny and free from a king.

They had no papers, just the clothes on their backs

They wanted to be seen as equal, to be given a fair chance

and still after all these years that is all that they ask.

With Love,

Gv Rioz
